Financial Jargon Uncovered

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By John Gibb Cash flow is the business’s ability to pay for things and is often referred to as the lifeblood of a company, because if it used well it can generate more cash. Cash flow can be measured on the balance sheet of a company by looking at the relationship between current assets and current liabilities. As a rule a business with considerably more current assets than current liabilities will have better cash flow. So what does a balance sheet show? Typically it would contain things a business actually owns such as equipment, cash and buildings these are known as fixed assets. If the Business is owed anything, this on a balance sheet is interpreted as current assets. These usually comprise of money owed by customers, stock, pre-payments and/or investments. Another line item you would expect to see on a balance sheet are a businesss current liabilities this is what the business owes. Liabilities can be short term (due within one year) or long term. Short term liabilities can include outstanding payments to suppliers and accrued salaries. Long term liabilities can be debt with a maturity greater than 12 months. The balance sheet must by law include the elements shown above underlined. However, what each includes will vary from business to business. Earnings are usually the best indicator of a companys profitability. Below are some of the terms used with a brief explanation of what each actually means? Revenue: this reflects the companys sales of products or services; leasing or renting, property or equipment. Cost: this indicates expenditure required to generate the revenue. Gross Profit: This is the Companys revenue minus its costs equals its gross profit (or it could be its loss) To give an example, if a company makes 12k in revenue but to generate tat revenue it has cost them 8k then their Gross Profit would be 4k. Expense: These are charges not directly relating to producing a good or a service. These can be things such as salaries, rent, advertising etc. Net Profit: Profit made after taxes have been paid. Special Children and Church - How to Help

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Mary Gusman Going to church for many families today means that the parents sit in the main service while their children are sent to childrens church. Maybe that works fine for some families. In fact, Ive heard many parents say that they were glad to get a break. However, there is an entire population of children and families for which there is no place in the majority of todays churches — families who have children with special needs. Autism alone impacts as many as 1 out of every 166 children in America today according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). So what are the churches doing for these children and their families who really need some extra support? Sadly, many do nothing but ignore these families and their children, while some even reject them. Families who have a child with autism or other special needs are overwhelmed. Daily life is exhausting. Leaving the house is an ordeal. Going to church is, unfortunately, often out of the question. How can we expect a child with autism to sit quietly in a church service? We cant. How can we expect a child with autism to be left in a large group of other children for childrens church? We cant. As the parent of an autistic child, I have learned how to survive the daily stress of caring for my sons needs, but it seems too much to ask from a church. I know other parents who feel this way as well. We can choose to just stay out of church or attend without our special needs child. We can attempt to have our child sit in the service with us which is usually very stressful as we deal with the stares and comments from people who dont understand. We can stay with our child in the childrens church class but then we never get to be a part of the church service ourselves. None of these options seem to meet the needs of our family. Perhaps if more churches took an interest in learning how they could be of help to families of children with special needs, they could then offer appropriate assistance. Any outreach to these special families first requires understanding what they are dealing with. A video presentation has been developed by Autism Speaks that offers a glimpse into what families who have children with autism deal with on a daily basis. This video can be viewed online at: http://www.autismspeaks.org/sponsoredevents/autism_every_day.php Churches need to welcome all children including those with special needs. There is a huge ministry opportunity being missed as the number of families impacted by disabilities like autism continues to rise. It is my prayer that churches would help to bear the physical, emotional, and financial burdens that these families carry. If churches dont know what to do, all they have to do is ask. A great first step would be to have some volunteers offer to be trained by the parents so they could help out in the familys home and in church services and related activities. Perhaps the church could ask if there are any financial expenses for therapies that they can help with. At the very least, just offering a word of encouragement to a weary parent and letting them know that you are praying for them helps families not feel that they are all alone. Through supportive words and actions, churches can demonstrate the love of God through touching the lives of these special children and their families. Mesothelioma Law Firms

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Kristy Annely Dr. H. Montague Murray diagnosed the ill effects of asbestos exposure in the beginning of the twentieth century. This was a chance discovery during an autopsy where the British doctor reported lung disfiguration. This initial diagnosis paved the way for other medical practitioners to continue further research on this subject. The harmful health effects of asbestos factory workers and miners became a contentious issue. Medical malpractices even masked a number of cases as emphysema, which is an after effect of smoking. However, times have changed and defaulting companies have been dealt with severely. To contest this problem in its entirety, Mesothelioma law firms have worked towards ensuring workers safety. Mesothelioma is defined as a cancer type that affects the mesothelial cells, which are found in internal body organ linings. Upon recognition of asbestos health hazards, numerous legal provisions were incorporated. America has not banned the use of asbestos but has laid down laws that protect workers exposed to it. At times, it may be increasingly difficult for Mesothelioma law firms to prove their case irrespective of laid guidelines. This is because Mesothelioma is seldom detected in its initial stages and most physicians understand the disease in its later stages. Mesothelioma law firms are dedicated to protect the rights of affected people and provide compensation accordingly. Since the outcome of asbestos exposure is a known issue at present, companies take necessary action to prevent such severe fallouts. However, most law firms are still engaged in fighting for plaintiffs that were exposed to the condition between 1930 and 1970. Arguments state a number of people may have even perished without correct diagnosis. The intensity of a verdict usually depends upon a company’s modus operandi wherein most chose to mask its aftereffects. This can also be proved as criminal intent of companies. Mesothelioma law firms comprise of a team of specialized and experienced lawyers who represent the plaintiff. When considering a lawsuit, people need to find a reputed Mesothelioma law firm that can represent a case well. Mesothelioma Lawsuits provides detailed information on Asbestos Mesothelioma Lawsuit, Failure To Diagnose Mesothelioma Lawsuits, Mesothelioma Lawsuit Attorneys, Mesothelioma Lawsuit Directories and more. Winterizing Your Pond

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Brett Fogle For many parts of the country, it’s getting to be that time of year again. Time to start thinking about getting your fish and plants ready for old man winter… Every year, as the weather gets colder and we start heading into winter, many of our customers ask us how to prepare their ponds for winter. Pond owners should be aware of several simple things to do in preparing their ponds for colder months. Fish and plants need very different things in the winter, but can be kept in top condition for the following season if the appropriate steps are taken (see related articles). Fish should be fed less, floating annuals should be thrown out, potted hardy plants should be cut down and moved to the bottom of the pond, filters should be cleaned & drained, and pumps shut off. Another good practice that we recommend is to do a partial pond cleaning and water change. It’s not necessary to drain the pond completely, but we recommend draining 25% - 50% of the water and net out or remove as much organic debris as possible (IE: leaves, plants, etc.) The reason for this is because rotting leaves, dead plant material, and other organic wastes will give off toxic gasses as they decay during the winter. This can be especially dangerous if the pond is allowed to freeze over. A thick layer of ice can easily form over the pond in sub-freezing temperatures, which can prevent these gasses from escaping from the pond. If allowed to build up, your fish will suffer. The most likely result will be a weakened immune system, and a more vulnerable fish you will have come spring time. Anything you can do to reduce stress on your fish prior to and during winter, will pay off handsomely in the Spring. Your fish will be much more vibrant and healthy. Another important reason not to let your pond ice-over is because the oxygen levels in the pond water can drop to dangerous levels. By keeping the pond surface from freezing over, or by at least keeping a 2′ - 3′ hole in the ice, you can eliminate or greatly reduce these dangers. Oxygen levels should be maintained during winter if at all possible. If you have a standard aquarium air pump - plug it in outside and let it run all winter. We also recommend maintaining your salt levels during winter. This keeps your fish’s slime coat strong, and immune systems strong all winter long! God, the Author of Confusion

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

By Christine Bettridge The statement has been made that the Bible is so full of conflicting assertions and contradictions that it is impossible to comprehend. The Bible was written by average people like you and me but they were inspired by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit guided them in what to write and say. The Holy Sprit is from God. John 14:26; 16:13. So since God is perfect and all knowing He cant be the one to cause all of our modern day confusion. Society is confused because there are so many different doctrines you dont know which one to believe. So if we are saying there are no contradictions in the bible then how do you figure out who is right and who is wrong? To begin with you have to know when it was written, the audience, who it was written for and to as well as knowing under what conditions it was written. Just like any story if you can use the what, when, where, why and how that you learned in school it makes it easier to understand. The Bible being a puzzling book to some degree each chapter is in complete harmony with one another. To know who is right or wrong the doctrine cannot disagree with the purpose of the Bible as a whole. If a person, doctrine or theory disagrees with any point then one or all could be wrong. Its no wonder that the world is in a constant upheaval about Christianity. There are so many denominations no one knows who or what to believe. I dont think that God intended it to be this way. In New Testament times there werent all the denominations that we have in our present day. There was only one Lord, one faith, and one baptism. Ephesians 4:5. Today we have many faiths, churches all teaching something different, creeds and baptisms. God is not a God of confusion but of peace. I Corinthians 14:33. The 1st century Christians were instructed by the apostle Paul to agree and that there were to be no divisions among them but yet there are so many divisions today. I Corinthians 1:10. The problem is if the early Christians were told to agree is it possible today in the 21st century? The point I would like to make is if it isnt God and the Bible, then who is the author of confusion. The confusion is going to continue until Christians get back to the basics. Some believe a certain way because thats the way they have been brought up or its the popular viewpoint. Christians need to start examining the church they attend as well as their own beliefs. They shouldnt just accept something because thats the way everyone believes about a subject especially concerning end times. End time type of preachers has some scared into a tizzy. When something is said you should be like the Christians of Berea as described in the book of Acts. They took the time to search the scriptures to see if what they were being told was true. Acts 17:11. The apostle John also said to test the spirits to see if they were from God. He says to not believe everything you hear. I John 4:1. In other words examine what you are being told and if you cannot find it in the scriptures then it has to be rejected. In first century times they foretold the fact that Christians would fall away from the faith and find teachers who would preach what they wanted to hear rather than what the truth is. I Timothy 4:1-5; 6:3-4; II Timothy 4:1-5. I challenge you today to start examining your beliefs as I do everyday. Having an open mind to the possibility of being wrong will be the hardest challenge. If you can overcome that then I am sorry to say its still uphill from there but at least the hardest test will be over. When examining scripture dont twist it to make it agree with what you believe but rather read it to understand what to believe. Using a lot of common sense goes a long way. Lastly dont take my word for it get your paper, pens, highlighters and examine the scriptures also everything I have said as well. Come now and let us reason together. Isaiah 1:18. Rosemary Essential Oil in Aromatherapy

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Lisa Barger Rosemary is a small evergreen shrub indigenous to the Mediterranean. One of the best known herbs, rosemary has been used medicinally since ancient times. In some cultures, rosemary was burned to clear the air and evidence shows that it was also apparently used in some embalming procedures. Rosemary is distilled from the leaves of Rosmarinus officinalis. Traditional Herbal Uses The ancient Greeks believed rosemary to be a potent treatment for digestive problems and many cultures embraced the idea of rosemary as a powerful mental stimulant. Medieval herbalists recommended rosemary for lethargy, palsy and “diseases of the brain”. Modern herbalists embrace rosemary’s alleged healing properties as well. Herbal books recommend warm compresses of rosemary for gall bladder and liver problems. Rosemary is among the most popular scents in handmade cosmetics. In skin care, rosemary is believed to be an excellent herb for hair and scalp problems. It’s commonly added to natural shampoos and some herbalists believe it can stimulate hair growth. It’s also added as a dandruff preventative. In Chinese medicine, rosemary promotes the circulation of Qi and invigorates the blood. Aromatherapy Uses Rosemary has long been associated with everlasting love and some cultures prized it as a sacred herb. It’s not uncommon for brides to tuck a sprig or two of rosemary into their bouquets. Esoteric aromatherapists believe rosemary to be a powerful psychic protector. Rosemary is associated with the third eye (brow chakra). Aromatherapists will diffuse rosemary into the air to promote mental clarity, deepen concentration and increase retention during periods of learning. A study cited in the Aromatherapy Database found that mice exposed to rosemary showed increased loco-motor activity. Blending With Other Essential Oils Rosemary has a definite “medicinal” scent but the smell is more subtle than that of, say, eucalyptus. It blends extremely well with citrus oils and works equally well with herbaceous scents like basil or thyme. And a 50-50 blend of rosemary and lavender gives you a classic fragrance for linens. Rosemary is considered a middle-note. Safety & Warnings Rosemary is generally considered safe though many essential oil experts warn against its use by pregnant women and those with epilepsy or high blood pressure. Your Supermarket vs. Your Local Friend

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Sue Neve Depending on the season and what type of food I buy, I generally do a big shop at the supermarket every two weeks or so. The odd items will need to be topped up of course, especially in the summer as fresh produce obviously doesn’t last as long as tinned, packet or frozen. Most often nowadays I’ll use on line shopping. Sit there on your computer, clicking away with your mouse, adding items to your virtual basket, picking a delivery date, confirming your order and your shopping is delivered to your door. You only have to pack it away in your kitchen. There’s no travel involved, no hunting around the car park, battling with ignorant people who always think they ‘own’ a particular spot. there’s no wandering around the isles with the wobbly trolley from hell, and you don’t have to put up with those people who block the aisle with their trolleys and give you the evil eye if you dare to say ‘excuse me please.’ Even without the stress of the supermarkets, they are convenient, they’re packed with almost everything you could want, under one roof. The larger ones now even sell furniture and electrical items, so you can pick up a new PC or Plasma TV with your litre of milk and box of organic free-range eggs. The supermarket is impersonal. There’s a certain anonymity to shopping in one of the great big hangars of produce. There is a thought/attitude of ‘I just want to get in, get my shopping and leave. I don’t want to be hassled.’ Supermarkets do provide a service, and in this stressful, busy world we now live in, it has become an invaluable service. What about the local store though? These can range from the very small offering only the most basic of items to the medium sized who seem to stock all the basics and a few extras. Go into any local store and a quick look around will orientate you as to where all the items are. Local shops are just that, local. There’s no need to get into your car for the short drive, polluting the atmosphere. The short walk for you and your children is a great way to get out of your house, out of your car and can help you keep fit. It stops you being lazy. Customer service is much better too. At the supermarket, the checkout staff will often offer the obligatory ‘Hello,’ and ‘Can I help you with your packing.’ Rarely do you find the genuine staff for whom it is more than just a job and are actually interested in providing you with the best service possible. At the local store, the staff tend to get to know their customers. Become a regular and it will brighten your day when you enter the shop to greeted by name, and a quick conversation will make you feel less like you are just an army ant doing your job but never receiving recognition. Here are two personal examples: When I was six years old, I lived in a part of Wales until I was nine years old. The local shop was like a mecca to my sister and I. Our Mother would often send us there on errands. When I was fifteen, I re-visited that shop, and the old lady who had been proprietor back then was still there. Even though I had only lived in the area for three years as a child, and had changed quite a bit, she still remembered my Mother, sister and I.I lived in an area of Scotland for roughly eighteen months, moved away for four years, and when I came back, the shopkeeper in my local store not only remembered me, but greeted me warmly and told me it was nice to see me back. It’s not that I have a memorable face. Nor is it because I am well known. It is simply because in the vast majority of cases, the local storekeepers care about the community, giving good customer service, and finding out in a personal way how better to serve your shopping needs. Use your local shop. The more people use them, the better society will become. People will enjoy shopping more, children will become educated to their community, supermarkets will have to improve in the areas they are lacking and it will help reduce pollution, as more people stop using their cars for such small journeys. Sue Neve is a graduate of the university of life. She can be regularly found trying to educate others to understand society around them through discussions on many subjects. Office Nomance

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Sean Williams Are Office Romances really that bad? The answer is ..it depends on the individual. The key to success in an office romance is accepting the reality of the situation. Some relationship experts say if you engage in this type of relationship, you should keep it on the hush hush and keep it professional. In a utopian office environment that might work but when emotions are involved, people tend to stray from such principles. So, I say accept from the get go if you become intimate with each other that it will leak out to the corporate environment; the corporate eyes are omnipotent and eventually gossip and rumors will spread quicker than wildfire. For example, at my job, a female co-worker who had recently broken up with a fellow co-worker revealed to me his inadequacies in the bedroom and how he was the biggest loser she had ever dated. Now, if she told me this personal information and we were just associates, imagine who else she told at our organization. The point is arm yourself with the foresight of the potential consequence of an office relationship. Once youre accepting of this awareness and your okay with it, proceed on to your newly blossoming office relationship. Like my friend says the only two things that can happen in a relationship is you either break up or worst you get married. If the reality that your personal business might be exposed and put on display daunts you then you should probably refrain from the office romance. In the end, its your choice, you have to dig deep, look within yourself and make a decision that aligns with your values. Sean Williams is a Relationship Coach for men and women. Buying Discount Contact Lenses Online

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

By Elizabeth Morgan Individuals obtain contact lenses either to eliminate the need for wearing glasses and spectacles, or to achieve a different look. Contact lenses have become very popular and common for a variety of reasons. Some people may like to wear color contact lenses and change eye color to light or dark eyes. Some companies sell contact lenses as daily disposable contact lenses, which are absolutely safe and risk free. Risk of purchasing a non-standardized piece considerably increases when a customer decides to purchase contact lenses at discounted rates. Hence, it is essential to make certain that optical stores selling at discounted prices are genuine and not selling fake contact lenses. Customers also need to make sure that the quality of these contact lenses meets required standards. Some dealers may offer contact lens on Internet at discounted prices. They can manage to do so because they reduce their overhead expenses by selling online. As a result, many people may prefer to purchase contact lenses online, rather than paying high retail prices at traditional optical stores. It is preferred because in addition to the lower prices, online sites can also assure quality by providing certification papers and a money back guarantee if any problem occurs. Some online companies also allow customers to personally inspect the contact lenses before making a purchase. If a customer is not satisfied with the product purchased, companies may offer to either refund the money, or exchange it for another pair of contact lenses. However, to make use of this offer, the customer has to return the original pair, within the deadline specified by the dealer. It is important to read the instructions that appear on the packet of contact lenses and follow them. There are guidelines and tips provided with instructions to clean contact lenses with special solutions. It is necessary for an individual to consult an eye doctor if there is any sort of irritation or reddening of the eye due to contact lenses. Many online sites provide information regarding the best online optical stores that sell standardized contact lenses.
