Pruning Your Bonsai Correctly

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Steve Welker One of the primary methods used to limit the size of a bonsai tree is pruning. Pruning is the careful remove of parts of the tree to shape it and limit the size. Properly pruning your bonsai is critical for the health and design of your tree. The frequency and degree of pruning is heavily dependant on the size, age and type of tree being pruned. Deciduous saplings are not pruned at all the first year and are usually only pruned once the second year. With conifers it is best not to prune them at all until the third year. If you are trying to increase the trunk thickness of a deciduous tree that is 3 to 5 years old you should cut it back twice a year. You should wait to do this cutting until the tree has grown to about 2/3rds of the planned final height. How many leaves you leave on the tree depends on the size and shape of crown that you are trying to develop. Usually you will leave from 1 to 8 leaves. Mature trees that are more developed are usually not pruned until there are 5 to 8 leaves on the shoots. While the tree is growing the there is a hormone released from growing shoots that flows downward under the inner bark (bast) that prohibits buds from forming below. When you remove the growing shoot then the hormone production stops so the next bud down will start to develop. Since the development of this new bud starts producing the hormone again you will only get one new bud to start growing. If a shoot has any leaves growing on it then the tips are usually removed in the late summer. This gives the shoot time to thicken and harden to survive over the winter and to develop new buds. The method used to remove these tips is called pinching and is normally done with tweezers or your finger tips. This will cause the tree to stop growing for the season and start preparing for winter. However, if the soil nitrates are high then the tree will probably continue growing instead of preparing for its winter dormacy. If you need to remove large branches from deciduous trees it is best done during the peak growing season. This peak season runs from early spring until mid summer. If you do the cutting during this time the cut area will heal much faster. When removing large branches you should use concave or wen cutters. These create a concave wound that will heal better with less scarring. You should always use a wound sealant to help protect the tree. Japanese paste works very well and is easily removed once the cut has healed. With conifers you can safely remove large branches even during the winter as well as during the growing season. On a conifer you might want to consider leaving part of the branch intact on the tree. This can be turned in to a jin for cosmetic appeal. Proper pruning is critical for the proper development of your tree. It allows you to control the size and appearance to create exactly the visual image that you want. Like many things proper pruning takes time and practice. Be patient and if in doubt about removing something then leave it. You can always cut it off later. Mind/Body Health: Riding the Wave, Part 1

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Joel Guarna From mainstream, popular culture to the physicians examination room, the mind-body connection is an issue with widespread interest. Whether you are a reader of scientific journals or TV Guide, you have surely been exposed to the “buzz” around these issues. Mind/Body Health We can understand the interest in mind/body health, as part of a larger shift, a correction of the reductionism and fragmentation more typical of modern thought and modern life. This fragmentation was an unintended side effect of the explosion of scientific knowledge over the last few centuries. The resulting deluge of information has led to endless specialization in most scientific fields. This specialization of study and understanding “trickles down” to the mainstream, sometimes in obvious ways, such as in our educational and healthcare systems. Our Fragmented Selves We are products of our culture. Therefore, it should be no surprise that the modern person finds him or herself in such a fragmented state. Too many forces conspire to convince us that the various aspects of our selves really are separate. In error, we come to believe that we can have physical health without emotional health–or either in the midst of lives that preclude balance. We come to believe that we can sustain ourselves while ignoring some of the most valuable aspects of our lives. By extension, we also believe that our illness, when it inevitably arises, also occurs in isolation–and so seek remedies that reflect such wrong views. And our spiritual lives? Well, we can attend to those later, right? Pros and Cons The current interest in mind/body issues is sure to have mixed effects. Some effects will likely be positive, such as renewed interest in whole person health, curiosity and openness to alternative treatments, and increased understanding of the complex interactions among our biology, psyche, learning history, environment, and spirit. Some effects will be unfortunate, such as the inevitable commercialization of mind/body issues, and the costs (time, energy, and resources) of pursuing ineffective treatments for serious ailments. The challenge will be to take what is of value and to leave the rest–to ride this wave mindfully. Interested in mind/body health? Save Money Doing Your Own Wedding Flowers

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Willie Jones A wedding takes an enormous amount of time and money. From the hall to the dress, the flowers, the cake, invitations, food etc., it is wise to save where you can. You may not want to cut corners with your dress but you can save a lot of money doing your own flowers. A florist needs to make money and in order for them to this they need to spike up cost tremendously. What you are paying for is not only the flowers but you are paying for the cost of the flowers, vases and containers (which they buy wholesale and mark up 50% to 75%), the salaries of the people making the arrangements, paying for the driver and gas and other incidentals. This is their business and they need to do this in order to be successful. But if you are somewhat artistic and want to save some money, you can do your own flowers. Here are some basic things you need to do: 1) Look through bridal magazines or online to get an idea of what kind of arrangements you are interested in. Having pictures of what you like can help you decide the colors and styles. Investing in a flower arranging book can be of enormous value to you as it gives you the complete how too and what tools you need and lots and lots of pictures. 2) Without having experience in floral design, simple may be a better choice but that does not mean its less effective. Something like a tall vase with white gladiolas in them placed on each table looks incredible and is about the easiest arrangement you can put together. This also works very well as altar pieces. If you want a low arrangement you can do something like a low vase with just roses of your color choice and sprinkle rose petals around it on each table. If roses are too expensive you can do the same with cheaper flowers such as carnations, daisies, Gerber daisies or mums. Whatever you like that fits your budget. 3) Do the table arrangements and altar pieces before tackling the bridal and bridesmaid bouquets. These also typically take the most time to do. There are two ways you can go. You can go to a craft store and buy ready made floral foam with a handle and lace skirt that you will soak with water to insert your flowers into or you put freshly cut stems together and bind them with floral tape and then ribbon. 4) A simple but beautiful bouquet can be made by taking roses that have been cleaned of most of their leaves and thorns. In one hand hold the first few roses and keep adding a rose one at a time until you have the desired amount of roses. Make sure they are not all flat at the top. You want your bouquet to be rounded. You do this by carefully taking the outer roses and pulling them down gently all around until you have the desired effect. The center of your roses will be the highest roses while the rest of the roses will gently slope downward. 5) When you have decided what you want then gather up your bridesmaids or whom ever you think could best help you and well before the wedding, do a test run and make one of each arrangement you would like to do. This will give you an idea of how it is going to look and how long it takes to do each one. Take a close up picture of each arrangement once you are satisfied. Doing a run through also lets you determine the cost. Just multiply by the number of arrangements you need to do. If you are happy about your work and you really want to know what your savings will be, then take your pictures to a flower shop and get them to give an estimate for making the same arrangements. You will know what you paid, now compare that to the florists quote. Doing your own flowers will take more of your time but if you have a good support system helping you, (which can be a really fun time) you can take pride in your accomplishments and save a lot of money. Is There A Cold Sore Cure - Some Advice On Treating And Preventing Cold Sores

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Stacy_Richford] Stacy Richford Dealing with cold sores which are actually a form of oral herpes is not only painful at times but can be quite embarrassing as well. Lets take a look at a few tips for managing cold sores that will make your day to day life a bit easier. Using over the counter medications to treat cold sores. There are different forms of store bought cold sore remedies that all work in different ways. First are those that are primarily designed to relive the symptoms associated with cold sores, such as the overall pain, burning and itching many sufferers experience. Then we have certain medications that try to create an environment that will halt the cold sore formation it self along with promoting the healing process to begin early. Medications that try and just treat the symptoms of cold sores typically employ various numbing agents to do their work, using chemicals such as lidocaine, benzyl alcohol, tetracaine, benzocaine, camphor, and phenol. The products that try and slow the formation of cold sores and promote healing tend to use ingredients that have anti viral properties such as lysine, zinc, phenol, and tannic acid. While these compounds do not have a direct impact on the herpes virus it self, they do create an environment that makes it more difficult for it to thrive. Many people also have quite a bit of success with many different home remedies and herbal cures for treating their cold sores. Here are a 3 helpful tips for preventing and dealing with cold sores. Use a lip balm that contains zinc and provides sun protection. Sun light seems to be a trigger for the out break of cold sores in many people. Apply ice to your cold sore while it is still in its “tingling” phase for about 10 minutes. There are two benefits to this. The first being that the ice will act as a numbing agent providing immediate relief for the symptoms you are feeling right now. The second benefit is that the coldness from the ice will slow down the formation of the cold sore by affecting its metabolic process. Lastly try putting a moistened tea bag when a cold sore is first forming. Tea contains a natural form of the antiviral chemical called tannic acid mentioned earlier. I hope you found the information provided useful, and I wish you cold sore free future! Want to know more about an alternative treatment for cold sores? Is Your Girlfriend Cheating on You?

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

By Mark De Smit You have been going out with your girlfriend for quite some time now. Tying the knot with her is a big possibility. However, you have a nagging feeling that something is just not right. Is your girlfriend cheating on you? Finding out whether or not your girlfriend is unfaithful to you starts from the time you accept the possibility of it happening. There are signs that can lead you to the truth. Most often these are things or changes you will likely notice if you are very observant or simply willing to seek the real story. Is she more concerned about her weight now when it did not really bother her before? Is your girlfriend spending more time with “friends” lately? Does she seem to splurge more on cosmetics and sexy clothes recently? A cheating girlfriend can be more charming or loving towards you to cover-up her unfaithfulness. On the other hand, she can also be more easily irritated or angered over small matters that may or may not really be your fault. She may be overly devoted and spend more time with you or have less time with you. She may also have lots of things and stories to share or she may be always tired and have nothing much to say. Pay close attention to details that could give merit to your suspicions. You can never be certain about her infidelity until she admits it or she is caught in the act. Know what to look out for by reading books or guides on how to catch a cheating partner. With computers and Internet available in most homes, it is possible for your girlfriend to develop an affair online. If you suspect this is so, there are some things you can do to ferret out the truth. One way for you to catch a cheating girlfriend is by installing a software that monitors Internet activity in your computer. A computer software like PC Pandora will provide you the ability to record and get snapshots of the different websites visited. It is like a detective that spies on all things done over the Internet using your computer. It can monitor electronic mails, instant messages as well as conversations in chat rooms. It can also determine passwords with its keylogger feature. If your girlfriend creates a new e-mail address, changes her passwords or simply refuses to share her online activities with you, it does not necessarily mean she is cheating. It could be really just a desire for some space or privacy. However, if she is indeed being unfaithful, you can determine the truth through careful gathering of facts. With a program or software monitoring your computer’s Internet activities your partner cannot hide from you any online affair that she may have. An affair does not have to be a physical one to be considered as cheating. If you value true loyalty and commitment in a relationship, flirting online or offline is simply not acceptable. Determine the quality of your relationship with your girlfriend before you suspect her of cheating on you. If you have given her your trust, most likely you will not consider some recent changes as grounds for suspicions. If you are suspicious from the very start, it is possible that you will consider every change in attitude or activity as a sign of infidelity. My name is Mark I started How To Catch a Cheating Wife on the 7/10/05. A friend of mind asked if I could look up how to catch a cheating wife on my computer. So I went online, Searching through the Search Engines. He said Kris was not quite being her self for the last 6 months. Turned out Adam’s wife was cheating with his daughter’s friends Mum. HE never ever would have pick it he said, So there you go. Visit: How to catch a Cheating Wife or Spouse. Face Lift Information

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Margaret Wommack As you age, your skin becomes slack and your muscles become less taut. This makes your skin sag and you look older than you actually are. People ask you if you are tired or sick or angry when you are actually in a pleasant mood. While it cannot restore skin elasticity, a facelift can make you look and feel years younger. Facelifts (rhytidectomy being the clinical term) are designed to pull the excess skin tight again and tighten the muscles underneath. Different doctors recommend different modes of anesthetizing facelift patients for surgery, but you should discuss what you are comfortable with in your consultation. Patients on general anesthesia will sleep through the entire procedure but are more likely to be hospitalized for a day. The other option is to have local anesthesia and take a sedative. Patients who chose this option will be awake but relaxed and drowsy during the operation and due to the local anesthesia will feel no pain. Then the incision is made behind the hairline to hide the scar and then around the front of the ear. Sometimes a second incision is made in the chin. The surgeon separates the skin from the underlying tissues and removes excess fat that affects the way that the skin hangs over the face. Then the facial muscles are tightened. Finally the skin is pulled up to the incision line and the excess is trimmed away and the incision is sewn back. Pain associated with recovery from a face lift is usually minimal and most patients are glad that they had the surgery. Facelifts are often performed in conjunction with other types of cosmetic surgery including brow lift and eyelid surgery. Want more Information about Face Lift Cosmetic Surgery? Simple Tips For Losing Weight

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Ron Swerdfiger Weight loss is a tough result to obtain regardless of weight or level of physical fitness. There are many different ways to lose weight, some more unhealthy than others, but the ones that work are most times the most complicated to pull off. Some people may recommend eating less to lose weight, and in some cases eating less is a key component of losing weight, but in most cases, eating is a necessity if one wishes to lower their own weight. Without food and the calories they supply, your body has no energy to burn and in turn will turn your existing muscle into fat. In order to lose weight you must make a commitment, a commitment that must not be broken if you desire results. Do not misconstrue this for the idea that you can never indulge during your diet, but just be sure that you have set reasonable limits for yourself that you are ready to commit to. If you are on a strict diet, a “cheat” meal here and there will go a long way to keeping you happy. To be successful in achieving your goal of weight loss: set multiple, smaller, more easily attainable goals for yourself. These will keep you self-motivated and more likely to obtaining your overall goal of a happier and healthier life. The Lowdown on Enrolling in an Online College for Nursing

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Sara Reed Enrolling in an online college for nursing is a great way to further ones nursing career. Nurses who already have degrees but who want to earn another can keep their current job while attending classes online. This has become a trend that many nurses are taking advantage of because it allows them to have the time to absorb the information at their own pace. They are better able to retain the information and apply it later on in their career. Finding an online nursing program is easy these days. Many online programs are supported by established universities and colleges who are looking for students who want to earn a degree without having to step into a classroom. Enrolling in an online college for nursing is the same as enrolling in a traditional classroom program. Once enrolled, a student can choose which classes they would like to take and how many each semester. They will be given a syllabus that they will need to follow throughout the semester. Taking classes online can help people further their nursing career while still maintaining their lifestyle. Students will receive help and advice when they need it from their instructors. Some instructors will set up teleconferences with students in an effort to help them succeed. Enrolling in an online college for nursing puts a person in touch with successful people who can provide guidance throughout the students degree program. Many programs now offer job assistance after graduation. This can help those who are not currently working in the nursing field or who want to relocate after they graduate. With more nurses needed in specific fields, finding a job should be not that difficult at all. Many areas are in need of nurses immediately, so once a person graduates, they should find the job of their dreams. To find out more about enrolling in an online college for nursing, Sara Reed recommends Nursing Online Degree. Camera Phones - SIM Card Networks, And Extras For Your Phone

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Victor_Epand]Victor Epand Dependent on the phone you choose, to generalise most camera phones do have the capability to transfer picture to PC. You may have to purchase a cable as an extra or it may come with the phone, it depends. Depending on how you transfer you picture from phone to phone, e.g sending them as a picture message (you will be charged for this) or via bluetooth (this is free), will determine how much it cost. You do not have to pay for a text service to be able to use the camera, but if you want to send them on then you will. Once again photo quality and format is very much dependant on the phone, most Nokia phones have reasonable quality cameras and save pictures as .jpg in 640×480. With the quality of Lithium batteries. These days I would not worry about the phone running low due to camera use, most models will last at least 48 hours before dieing! It’s a good habit to charge a phone over night anyway so no problem there. Most camera phones that take photos in 640×480 can store about 600 pics, if you can use a memory card like i do ,with my Nokia 7710, you can potentially store around 10000, but thats a bit excessive! Depending on how much you spend on the phone will depend on the quality; if you can I would advise you to go for a Nokia, as they are extremely user friendly. There are also some Pre-Paid plans that offer an option through the plan to directly download pictures to your computer. Your best bet would be to determine what phone would allow you to connect it to your computer via USB cable and has PC Suite, for example, and then use for motorola Razr that will allow you to connect it to your computer. You charge it that way and also download the contacts and pictures to you computer. If your cell phone has bluetooth, you can also purchase a bluetooh USB Adapter that will allow you to use bluetooth to connect to your computer. To my knowledge, the cell providers do not sell the phones with these cables. You would need to purchase the cable from the cell phone company or a third-party provider. The cell phone providers want you to use their wireless service to send pictures, because they charge you eithera monthly fees for a specific amount of kilobytcs or typically for this service. The Jabra is a good buy. It’s either the same size or smaller than H500, cheaper, and also in black. It’s only suitable for bluetooth version or higher. It’s the only one, but its another for you to consider. Downside to the phone is 2 hours less talk time and 2 hours less stand by time then the H500. You could determine how much of your phone you use, and make a decision if the extra amount of money is worth the talk-stand by time. The thing is that the SIM Card on the phone is already programmed for Post Paid Plans. If you want to use the phone as a Pre-Paid you have to change the SIM Card in the phone to that of a Pre-Paid one. Another thing is that the phone would be locked onto the verizon you get when you purches the SIM Card for that network Pre-Paid service or it won’t work. Lanyard Instructions: Tying The Knot

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Phyllis Chapman Here are some ways you can tie up a non slipping lanyard using the following: A large loop, a small loop. Using only one knot to do this. The first step is the place the rope down on a flat surface in an S formation. Make sure the ends of the lanyard are overlapping by a few inches. Next tie a single overhanded knot in all the three different strands. Make sure the strands are even as you gently tighten up the knot. The second step is to tie the overhand knot on the center strand where everything merges. Put one end of the strand through the overhand from one of the sides of the knot, and the other knot through the other. Pull the strands together over the central overhand knot you just created. The third step is to create an interlocking overhand knot. Place the other end of the strand through the top knot in the overhand knot. As you can imagine it will take some practice to get an even looking knot. However like tying a tie, it will get better with more and more practice and trial and error. Feel free to treat this as a recipe to base your own unique concoction out of.
